Hardnesstester BARCOL

BARCOL hardness measurement is based on two standards: ASTM B648 and ASTM D2583.
  • ASTM B648 describes the use of the BARCOL 934-1 durometer for measuring the hardness of aluminum.
  • ASTM D2583 describes the use of the BARCOL 934-1 & 935 durometers for measuring the hardness of rigid plastics.
Note: model 936 is not currently covered by any standard.

By using different indenters and loading springs, it is possible to switch from one model to the other:
  • models 934-1 and 935 use the same indenters.
  • models 935 & 936 use the same springs.
  • all three models use the same indicator.
Note: the standards provide the specifications for the indenter for the 934-1 and 935 and for the indicator, but do not specify the measuring force/pressure for the various models. => reduced possibility of verifying the durometer using the direct method.

ASTM D2583 recommends
  • if the hardness measurement with a 934-1 is less than 20, a 935 should be used.
  • the 935's measuring range should be between 90 and 10.
  • and it can be assumed that for values measured with the 935 close to 10, a 936 should be used.

The indenters and display comparator can be changed by users.
